Indian Motorcycle is one of the most historic motorcycle manufacturers in the United States. Founded in 1901 in Springfield, Massachusetts, the company became one of the most successful and influential motorcycle builders of the early twentieth century.
During the golden age of motorcycling Indian produced a wide range of machines including racing motorcycles, military motorcycles, touring machines, and powerful large-capacity motorcycles. Models such as the Indian Scout, Indian Chief, and Indian Four became some of the most famous motorcycles ever produced.

Indian Motorcycle was founded by George M. Hendee and Oscar Hedstrom. The company began building motorcycles at a time when the motorcycle industry was still in its infancy. Early Indian motorcycles were single-cylinder machines designed primarily for reliability and endurance.
By the early 1900s Indian had already become one of the largest motorcycle manufacturers in the world and had achieved major success in motorcycle racing competitions.

The Powerplus was one of the most important Indian motorcycles of the early twentieth century. The engine design improved durability and provided strong performance for long-distance touring.

The Indian Scout became one of the most famous motorcycles ever produced by the company. Designed by engineer Charles B. Franklin, the Scout offered excellent balance, strong performance, and relatively light weight.
These characteristics made the Scout extremely successful in motorcycle racing and endurance events. The model remained in production for nearly three decades.

The Indian Chief became the flagship touring motorcycle of the brand. Known for its large displacement engine and distinctive styling, the Chief became one of the most recognizable motorcycles of the era.
Later versions of the Chief introduced the famous full fenders that became one of the defining visual characteristics of Indian motorcycles.

The Indian Four was one of the most sophisticated motorcycles produced by the company. The engine design was based on the earlier Henderson four-cylinder motorcycles that Indian acquired during the 1920s.
Indian Four motorcycles were smooth, powerful, and designed for luxury touring. They were among the most expensive motorcycles available during their era.
During the Second World War Indian produced motorcycles for military use, including the Indian 741 and Indian 640 models. These motorcycles were used by Allied forces for communication and transport duties.
Although Harley-Davidson ultimately supplied larger numbers of military motorcycles, Indian machines were still widely used during the war.
Indian Motorcycle played a crucial role in the development of American motorcycling. During the early twentieth century the company competed directly with Harley-Davidson and achieved major success in racing, engineering innovation, and international motorcycle sales.
